A Better Understanding
What is Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy is a collaborative and empowering approach that views people as separate from their problems, acting in resourceful and interesting ways to address them. Whether someone is a veteran of mental health, self-help or personal healing, or they are pioneering a new pathway forward in life, Narrative Therapy helps people focus on the resources inherent in lives and histories.
We are story telling creatures and depend on these stories to transmit our experience to one another in the hopes that what is being shared will be honored, regarded and dignified. Sometimes our stories are recruitment efforts to seek support, other times our stories aim to speak truth to power. Stories are always speaking for us, and shaping the view we take of ourselves. And it’s in the careful review of these stories that we find the subtle and significant details that provide a means for us to take heart once again and forge a pathway forward.
“We are storytelling creatures, and as children we acquire language to tell those stories that we have inside us.”
― Jerome Bruner
